Process Paper
I chose this topic because I wanted to do an event that had to do with sports. Any kind of sports. It also had to have a big influence on El Paso, Texas and on sports history. I have always like sports but, mainly soccer, football, and basketball. I couldn't find anything on soccer or football but, I did find something on basketball. It was the 1966 NCAA Men's National Basketball Champions. This topic interested me because the coach of the team that won (Western Texas) was Coach Don Haskins. He is one of my favorite NCAA coaches.
I conducted my research by looking for information in books, websites, old newspapers, and encyclopedias. I did find information on some books from my school library but, where I found most of my information was on a website. The website provided me with information of the event, the coach, the team, interviews with Coach Don Haskins and Don Haskins' wife, facts about the year, and photographs of the team and of the day of the event, and e-books.
Since the beginning of the project, I had decided to do a website because I had learned to do websites in fifth grade and I wanted to do something that was easy and I already knew. My website was going to consist of nine tabs. The first one was going to be the home page with a photograph of the team. The second one was going to be about the event. The third one was going to be about the team (each player's little biography including the coach). The fourth one was going to be about interviews of the event. The fifth one was going to be about photographs of the team (a gallery). The sixth one was going to be about fun facts of El Paso during the 1960s. The seventh one was going to be about my travel guide. The eighth one was going to be about my annotated bibliography. The ninth one was going to be about my process paper.
The DIVERSITY of the event was that the team had different types of cultures in the team from Hispanic to African American. The win soon grew into a symbol for blacks' breakthrough into college sports. The ODYSSEY was the team itself pushing themselves to the limits to win the championship. Haskins, a humble and private man who did his best to avoid the public spotlight, always said that color of skin was never an issue when he put his Miners on the court against Kentucky. "I was simply playing the best players I had. It was what I had done all year," Haskins said.
